Elaine has been around horses all of her life. Growing up in Ann Arbor, Michigan she was first exposed to riding at summer camp and soon found a way to be out at the local stables all year round. She participated in the local 4-H group where she got her first taste of competition on a leased horse at the summer county fair where she qualified for the State Championships by earning a Grand Champion at English pleasure at the tender age of 12. She was hooked! Elaine started eventing on her first horse, a 5 yr old off the race track thoroughbred, where she won several end of the year awards at Novice and Training Level in her teenage years.
It was then that she became increasingly interested in dressage and started taking lessons with local trainer Lisa Pierson who in turn introduced Elaine to her trainer, German riding master Bodo Hangen. Having outgrown her Thoroughbred's potential, she purchased a 4 yr old Holstiener mare that she trained through 4th level with the help of Lisa and Bodo and Bodo's working student at the time, Catherine Haddad. After Bodo's passing in the late 80's, Catherine left for Europe and Elaine continued to work with Lisa at home and Catherine when she returned for clinics from overseas. Elaine also had the opportunity to clinic with many other greats back in Michigan including Carole Grant, Major Andreas Lingren, and Karl Mikolka.
After college, Elaine decided to pursue her dream of working with horses for a living by moving to Virginia and taking a job as a groom and assistant trainer at a private facility that imported and sold European sport horses. It was here that she met Stacey Hastings and they both ended up moving to North Carolina where Elaine worked as Stacey's working student for a year before she leased her own farm and started her training business at Holly Run Stables in Catawba, NC. During her time in Virginia/Florida she worked extensively with Stacey and Michael Poulin.
In 2002, after much searching, Elaine found the perfect spot for her lifelong dream of building her own farm and started Lake Norman Dressage Center in Mooresville, NC. She has concentrated on teaching lessons and training horses and specializes in teaching riders "feel" and retraining horses with issues. She has trained several horses to the FEI levels and earned her Bronze, Silver and Gold medals. She has placed highly in several regional Championships and Year End USDF All Breeds Awards. She has recently been working with Dutch trainer Patrick Tigchelaar and also clinics regularly with Christopher Hickey and Catherine Haddad Staller. Currently Elaine is showing Wrendezvous, her own horse that has been trained solely by her, at Grand Prix.
